The five-second rule
The five-second rule is a popular rule and an urban legend that belongs to the hygiene and food category. According to this rule, any food or cutlery dropped on the floor must be picked up within five seconds in order to proceed and eat them or use them; otherwise, the food or the cutlery should be discarded. This rule originated when a diner in a restaurant in Moscow dropped his cherry on the floor but however continued eating it; when asked upon why he did something like that which is unhygienic, he quoted the five-second rule. It is then explained that the bacteria cannot infest the food or the cutlery if they’re picked up from the ground as soon as they fall. However, this rule has no scientific backing and only exists as an urban legend. Upon enquiring about the scientists about it, it is told that the rate at which the bacteria might infest upon a particular item will depend on various other conditions that are not significantly linked to the time alone.
