Stonehenge is a monument of massive stones set in circles. There were three stages in Stonehenge's development. The earliest structure, built about 5000 years ago, was a large earthwork, or henge, enclosed by an inner bank and an outer ditch. About 250 years later, Stonehenge was remodelled using 80 blue stones formed into an incomplete circle round the centre of the site. The Sarson circle, the last stage of construction, was started soon after in about 2400 BC. It consisted of 30 huge uprights capped by a continuous ring of lentils. Inside it were five shaped Trilithons arranged in a horseshoe formation open on the northeast side. Aligned to the northeast Axis was the original entrance to Stonehenge, marked by the heel stone. When viewed from the centre of the circle, the sun can still be seen to rise above this stone on midsummer's morning.
