A snowflake consists of masses of tiny bits of ice, microscopic specks of soil blown up from the ground usually begin the process of creating the snowflakes that fall as snow. The specks act as ice nuclei in clouds that have temperatures below freezing, tiny bits of ice, called snow crystals, are the basic components of snowflakes. Snow crystals may be formed when water vapor is deposited directly on ice nuclei, or when the ice nuclei cause tiny drops of supercooled water to freeze. Supercooled water is water that has remained unfrozen at temperatures below freezing. Every snow crystal has six sides, but each one differs in shape. Snow falls to Earth in the form of snowflakes. Each snowflake is made up of snow crystals in the clouds, snow crystals collide and stick together to form the snowflakes.
