Motion picture animation builds action one frame at a time. There are two common techniques, stop action and cell animation in stop action. Movement is created by changing the subject slightly as each frame is photographed. For example, clay characters are animated using stop action. When the film is projected at 24 frames a second, the illusion of movement is created. In celluloid animation, a figure is drawn on clear acetate with movement built by creating a new drawing for each frame of film. When the drawings are photographed one by one against backgrounds and then projected, the illusion of movement is created. This is the technique used for cartoons. Computer animation uses the same frame by frame principles of motion picture animation but stores the images electronically instead of on film.
