In meiosis, the cells chromosomes replicate and form pairs in a process called crossing. Over each pair exchanges chromosomal material to enhance genetic variation. The cell then follows division steps similar to mitosis, to form two daughter cells. These two daughter cells in turn undergo cell division to create a total of four new sex cells.
