This shows that corvids have the ability to plan ahead. Something almost unique in the animal kingdom and previously only shown in chimpanzees. Perhaps even more remarkably, corvids share their food. Male corvids even show the ability to understand what foods females prefer and will bring their mates tasty titbits of particular foods. If a female has eaten lots of one kind of food the male will bring her something different. According to Clayton it's a bit like someone offering you an apple if you've just eaten a lot of cheese. We don't think of corvids as song birds, but current research is just beginning to reveal that they are skilled mimics able to reproduce familiar sounds. Clayton has made close bonds with the birds she studies and knows them individually. A jay called Romero enjoys mimicking her when she talks to him. He lives with other jays in one of the large Cambridge University aviaries where she and her colleagues are transforming our understanding of bird cognition.
