You know, your breath is a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water, and only 1% of other gases. That 1% includes thousands of organic compounds or biomarkers which can help me to detect diseases such as diabetes, breast cancer or kidney failure, lung cancer. But there is one big challenge here; concentration. The biomarkers concentration difference between healthy people and patients is only parts per billion. How small is that? It's similar to finding a drop of dye in Olympic sized swimming pool. Is it even detectable? Yes. Dogs and bees have the ability to detect parts per trillions, a thousand times less concentrated. However, as far as I know, getting a detailed diagnosis from a bee is not easy without getting stung. So the question then becomes how can we humans detect this tiny concentration? The answer is on my fingertip. This is a device made by a spongelike film of billions of nanoparticles, each of them has a diameter of a few atoms, 1,000 times smaller than tip of your hair. If you blow onto my sensor, it can detect even the tiniest possibility of having a disease in your body. But how? It's all based on a chemical reaction within the biomarker in your breath and the surface of my sensor.
