The pyramids are some of the most well-known and impressive structures ever built by human hands. At the time of their construction Egypt was one of the wealthiest civilizations in the world. Their king or pharaoh held a unique role in society and this is reflected in the pyramid’s enormous size. The pyramids were built over a long period of time though the peak period was from roughly 2600 BCE to about 2320 BCE. In other words, they are more than four thousand years old. Now these magnificent structures still retain a great deal of their splendour and allow us to imagine something of what the ancient world was like. The largest, ‘the great pyramid of Giza’ is nearly 150 metres high and remain the largest structure in the world built by humans for over 3000 years.
