Humans can actually tell the difference between ten thousand different smells which sounds impressive, but a dog can be ten thousand times more sensitive to smells than humans. An individual human cell is just as sensitive as a dog's cell but dogs have many more of them, about one billion compared to only ten million cells in humans. Now although humans can recognise ten thousand different smells, it's often difficult for us to name them. If we think about people who are trained to recognise smells, such as perfume tasters or top chefs for example, they aren't necessarily any more sensitive with their nose than an average person. They're just better retrieving the names of the smells from memory.
