There are a lot of changes that happened at the base of the Cambrian period 540,000,000 years ago. People suggest that there's been a rise of oxygen at that time. People have suggested that the chemistry of the oceans may have changed at this time and so many people suggest there's an environmental cause for this change. At this point in time all of animal life was living in the ocean, so there was no life on land to speak of. All of this evolution was happening in the oceanic realm. So it's important to think about chemistry of the oceans, the temperature of the water, so on and so forth. People have also suggested that causes of the Cambrian explosion could come from the animals themselves, so that's once animals evolved a little bit they started interacting with each other and this drove evolution to happen at a faster rate. So sort of things like the predator prey arms race, where predator evolves some sort of way of getting at the prey and so the prey in response has to evolve the way to evade the predator, and this carries on and carries on and - it drives evolution to happen at a really rapid rate.
