During the 19th century, the industrial revolution brought social upheaval and technological progress that transformed agrarian life in Europe, Asia, and North America. Steam-driven machinery, the railroad, the internal combustion engine, and the harnessing of electricity powered the modern Industrial Age, a new economic order. Capitalism took root; factories and coal mines employed millions. Novelist Charles Dickens and others portrayed the new urban life in bleak terms. The German philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels predicted an inevitable workers' uprising in their Communist Manifesto. In the United States, economic and social friction between the industrial north and the agrarian South sparked a bloody Civil War, while across the Pacific, in a few short decades, Japan transformed itself from a closed feudal society into (an industrialized world power).
