Doctor Greer's work has shown that a certain kind of way of coping with cancer, which he's called fighting spirit, seems to be associated with better adjustment and even longer survival time with cancer. The idea is that people who aren't excessively stoic, who aren't hopeless and helpless, but who have an attitude that I would characterise as realistic optimism, seemed to do better in (dealing with the cancer).
