While the Renaissance masterpieces of Michelangelo, Titian, and Raphael remained religious and classical in subject matter, new world views challenged the orthodoxy of 16th century Europe. Medieval values gave way to a new humanism, Martin Luther's 95 Theses urged reform in the Roman Catholic Church and catalysed the Reformation. Protestant faiths, emphasising scripture and the human conscience, spread across Europe. Nicolaus Copernicus proposed that the Earth and other planets rotate around the sun, challenging the long-held view that the universe rotates around (the Earth).
