An eclipse occurs when a celestial body moves in front of another, cutting off the view from an observer. A solar eclipse, seen here in this animation, happens when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth. As the moon moves in front of the sun, it will cast a shadow that will travel across the planet. The shadow will have a dark part called the umbra, where the sun's light is blocked, and the day turns dark for about 7 1/2 minutes. To the observer standing in the umbra, the sun is obscured by the moon, and in total eclipse, causing it to be dark enough for the brighter stars of the night sky to make a brief appearance. At another place on the Earth, in the later part of the shadow, called the penumbra, the sun's light is only partially blocked, and at this point, an observer will see a (partial eclipse).
