Tornadoes are the most violent windstorms on Earth. Winds rotate around the centre of a tornado's funnel-shaped cloud at speeds of more than 200 mph, potentially causing tremendous damage. Most tornadoes occur in the spring in the Midwestern and southern states of the United States. They usually occur along a boundary between cool dry air from the north and warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico. Warm air is lighter than cool air, so the warm air rises. More warm air rushes in to take its place. The inrushing air also rises and begins to rotate, forming the funnel cloud of a (tornado).
