Red Sky at night, shepherd's delight; red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning. Probably the best-known weather saying, and it works. A glorious red sunset is caused by dust and a dry atmosphere diffusing the sun's rays. Damp, clear air would produce a watery yellow sunset. In summer, which is when most people are looking anxiously for fine days, the weather in Europe is dominated by a stream of cold fronts, bands of clouds sweeping in from the Atlantic. When we look westward into the sunset, we're looking through the approaching air mass. If the sunset is red, tomorrow's air is (dry).
