Germany is different to the other wine-growing countries of the world. For one thing, we are in a very northern climate—a climate as cold as Newfoundland, and the only reason the grape actually ripens is because we have these large rivers and microclimates. Germany produces about a seventh as much wine as France and Italy. But in spite of that, they are the largest importers of (white wines).
