Continental Drift is the theory that the continents have shifted, changing in both shape and location throughout the history of the Earth. Geologists believe that more than 500 million years ago, there were six major continents spread out along the equator. Over the next 100 million years, the continents drifted together, forming 2 huge landmasses. They continued to move until about 225,000,000 years ago when they met and formed a single massive continent, Pangaea. This supercontinent fragmented into new continents, which continued to move and reshape throughout the Triassic, Cretaceous and Quaternary periods, ultimately forming the continents we know today (as outlined in modern maps).
