Vertebrates must digest and absorb nutrients. Macromolecules are chemically digested to small molecules in the mouth, stomach, and small intestine. These small molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream through the cells lining the small intestine. Water and minerals are absorbed in the large intestine. Undigested material passes out of the body in the (faeces).
