Our oceans are really very well traveled on the surface, but in terms of the deep sea, uh, IT's probably the one area of our planet that hasn't been explored. The first visit by a human to the ocean floor was in nineteen sixty when the u s navy sent a vehicle to the mariana trench, the deepest part of the ocean. Anyway, what exactly do we know about the deep sea? Well, we define it as two hundred meters below the surface of the ocean. And around that point sunlight begins to disappear and temperatures begin to drop a thousand meters and beyond. There's complete darkness, very little oxygen, and pressures that are a thousand times greater than at the earth's surface. However, somehow it's full of life life that has a huge effect on our own lives, because half of the oxygen we breathe is generated by living things in the ocean.
