Nearly every chemical and cell that helps run and control the brain can be found in the gut. Until relatively recently people thought that the gut’s muscles and nerves were controlled by the brain through a pathway, that simply increased or decreased rates of activity. That was until someone decided to count the brain cells in the gut. Surprisingly they found that it contained over a hundred million nerves. That's more than the spinal cord has. And the nerve that connects the brain to the gut has only a couple of thousand nerve cells. The gut also seems to follow similar sleep patterns with 90-minute periods of inactivity followed by short periods of rapid muscle movement.
