The loggerhead turtle is one of the world's largest turtle species, and a species that's nearly distinct in the United States. These remarkable creatures are easy to recognize thanks to their large, robust heads and relatively short necks, traits that set them apart from other sea turtle species. A key part of the loggerhead turtle's life cycle is migration, which they undertake specifically to lay their eggs. To learn more about this migration, scientists conducted an important study back in September 1986. They attached a tracker to a loggerhead turtle's shell and used satellite technology to closely monitor and locate its migration route this was a groundbreaking way to map the turtle's movements in real time. What did the study reveal? The turtle traveled to different locations at different times throughout its journey. It took just one month for the turtle to swim south, and the entire migration—from South Florida all the way north—spanned three months in total. To visualize this path, a map of the U.S. East Coast was created, and on it, both the turtle's exact migration route and the year of the study (1986) are clearly marked. This research not only confirmed the loggerhead's impressive migration abilities but also provided valuable data that helps protect these unique turtles and their habitats.
