What makes the TRAPPIST-1 solar system particularly interesting to astrophysicists is not only the exciting prospect that seven of its planets could support life, but that life forms could conceivably be exchanged between them. Planets within the TRAPPIST-1 system are packed into an area twenty times smaller than the distance between Mars and the Earth. When planetary bodies inhabit such a densely packed region, debris between them can easily be swapped. Mars, for example, has frequently been hit by asteroids, resulting in fragments from the planet crash-landing on Earth. A recent theory, known as panspermia, speculates that life, if it exists in the TRAPPIST- I system, could feasibly attach itself to this debris and transfer from one planet to another. Three of its planets inhabit the so-called 'Goldilocks zone', where the temperature and amount of surface water could be just right to host life. If life forms were to be found there, it is almost inevitable that this interchange would take place. Of course, the likelihood of bacterial life surviving the journey between these planetary bodies is slim, but the idea of bacteria that could remain alive after travelling in such extreme conditions makes the prospect of discovering it all the more appealing to scientists.
