Medium Calorimeter
Transcript:
The bomb calorimeter is used to detect the calories of food by burning it. The nutrition value of food can be measured on many different scales. The most basic measurement scale is the free energy content of the food. How much energy is released when chemical bonds within the food are broken? The energy content of food is measured in calories, the amount of kinetic energy required to raise the temperature of one ml of water, one degree. Food is burned under controlled conditions, breaking chemical bonds and releasing free energy. The burning is chemically similar to the breakdown of food in cellular respiration although the process occurs much more quickly and in a less controlled fashion during ignition. The calorimeter consists of two vessels: outer vessel and inner vessel. The space between these vessels acts as a heat insulator and hence there is very little heat exchange in between the inner and outer vessels. Thermometer measures the temperature of the liquid in the inner vessel. The stirrer functions such as way to stir the liquid to distribute the heat in the entire vessels. The fiber rings in the calorimeter helps to hold the inner vessel hanging in the center of the outer vessel.
