Some of these seem to us to be unattractive, but even flies that live on decaying plants and animals are important.
Although some spread harmful bacteria and diseases such as malaria, sleeping sickness or yellow fever, most do not and they live in a great variety of ways.
These are recyclers, which means they help change dead things into chemicals which plants need to grow, so that the plants may use them over and over again.
Flies are among the commonest of insects, and many people think of them as being dirty and spreading disease.
