There they lament its destruction and pray for its restoration. The oldest part of the wall dates from about 200 BC, but it now forms part of a larger wall that surrounds a mosque. For this reason Jews and Arabs have long fought over its control.
Originally the 'Western Wall', it was given the name Wailing Wall' by Europeans who witnessed the mournful prayers of religious Jews before the remains of the sacred temple.
It is the only remains of a temple that was held to be uniquely holy by the ancient Jews, and destroyed by the Romans in AD 33.
For many centuries the Wailing Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem has been a place of prayer and pilgrimage for Jewish people.
Today, the wall measures about 50 metres long and about 20 metres high.
