Harun is best known as the rich caliph in whose time the Arabian Nights was written.
These are the stories which the girl Shahrazad told to the caliph each night to save herself from being killed and include Sinbad, Aladdin and Ali Baba. The two men exchanged gifts, one of which was an elephant.
It is sometimes hard to imagine that certain great people, about whom there are marvellous stories, lived at the same time and knew each other.
His reputation spread to the east and he was much admired by Harun al-Rashid.
Charlemagne and the Caliph never met but we know that they sent presents to each other. Charlemagne became king in AD 771 and his court became a great centre of learning.
