Many desert animals and insects survive by sleeping during the heat of the day and coming out to find food at night.
Animals such as kangaroo rats and gerbils can survive with little or no water.
Camels do not store water in their humps but they do store fat and can live for several weeks without a drink.
Often, they live underground where heat and cold do not penetrate and some aestivate; that is, they sleep through the hottest part of the year.
The Australian desert toad stores water in its body, while reptiles vary their body temperature to cope with heat and cold.
