Greenland is the largest island in the world. Most of it is covered by a thick sheet of ice that never melts, making it a very unwelcoming-looking land. The Norse Vikings were the first Europeans to discover it, in the 10th century, and it was from here that Leif Ericsson later sailed to Vinland, or Newfoundland.
