Good afternoon. I work in the heritage industry, and I wanted to introduce you today to some of the challenges we face while trying to preserve the important sites of our nation's past and open them up for tourism. We often have to make important and difficult decisions about whether or not to repair or restore historic buildings. Sometimes, the thing that people value most about decaying artefacts is the sense of history that they evoke. Think about the ruins of a castle, for example. Because they look old and decayed, the remnants make us think about just how long the castle has been around and the many people who have used it over time. Now think about the same castle but imagine that it has been damaged in a recent war. To restore it to how it was before the damage or even to its original state would seem almost like erasing important aspects of the building's past. On the other hand, if we don't intervene to halt or reverse the deterioration, there is a very real danger that the structures will become unsafe, which might mean that access to them would need to be restricted. Or, it may mean that the building could collapse beyond the possibility of repair, which would mean that it might cease to exist for future generations to appreciate. Add to this philosophical debate the very real issue that renovation is a costly undertaking, and budgets cannot always stretch to cover all of the projects that need it. While it's in our interest to preserve as much of history as we can, sometimes exactly how we should do that is not a straightforward decision.
