Diesel engines
Transcript:
Diesel engines had to develop engineering interest the hard way. The diesel engine appeared to offer little or nothing as a vehicle power plant in 1909, but it was worth watching at the time because of its high thermal efficiency. The threat of a gasoline shortage in 1917 and 1918 caused more attention to be paid to the diesel, and it became the subject of numerous technical papers. Kleiber Motor Company experimented with diesel-powered trucks in 1929. The engine type known as the diesel had, for many generations, been the dream of engineers. While man had developed mechanical power which was extremely useful, it was seriously inefficient. The steam engine of James Watt, in the late 1700s, was a commercial success; yet it wasted 90 percent of the energy in the fuel. Something far better was needed. Through the 1800s, many engines were built that ran on various mixtures, such as natural gas, coal gas, turpentine, hydrogen, and oil.
