One of the most frequently asked questions about leadership is: can it be taught? Can leaders learn to be better leaders; or are leaders just basically born with a certain array of talents that makes them into great leaders. Some argue that it's basically innate. It's an inborn trait or set of traits. Others say no, leadership can be developed... by experience… by executive programmes. My particular view is that both answers are true. The leadership is in part innate, but leadership can be developed. However good you are as a leader; you can become a better leader.
Now, how does one become a better leader? The best kind of practise is deliberate practise. Practise in which a coach and mentor helps you and works with you to get better. Indeed, developing as a leader is not that different than developing as a person. So that every theory or every model of leadership development is underpinned by a theory of adult development.
