Now, there are four stages that the FDA has and at each stage a company must be have the approval of the FDA to move on to the next stage. Now, the first stage is known as phase 1 and that is meant to study the safety of a drug/device. This phase lasts for several months. During this stage small numbers of healthy volunteers are involved and those who participate are paid for it. The sole purpose is to determine the effect of the drug on humans as well as to determine how it is absorbed, metabolized and excreted.
