You're all studying English now, and I'm sure that you've studied English for several years before this, but have you ever stopped to think about why you study English? Why do you and millions of other people around the world speak English? Historically, English was the native language of a very small country, England. So how did it become so common around the world. That's the question we're going to try and answer today. I'm going to start my lecture by talking about where English is spoken, and I'll give you some interesting statistics about how many people actually use English. After that I'm going to move on to a more difficult question. The question of who owns English, does English really belong to English people? Is it part of the culture of England?
