A recent government report state that standards in forensic testing have been steadily falling since a 2015 policy change which permitted the outsourcing of these services. Before 2012, all laboratories had to follow strict guidelines and were subjected to periodic inspection by an independent body. This is now no longer the case, and some of the laboratories that are being contracted do not meet the required standards. This could lead to unreliable evidence being presented in court and wrong convictions of innocent people or the non-conviction of offenders.
