I start by imagining my characters in different situations, which helps me understand their reactions and motivations. I often write detailed biographies for each character, even if most of the details don't make it into the final novel. This approach allows me to create credible and relatable characters. Another key aspect is dialogue; how a character speaks can reveal a lot about their personality and background. Lastly, I believe in letting characters evolve organically over the course of the story, which sometimes means they surprise me.
