The way we see colours is not only a matter for our eyes, it's connected to language too. A study has shown that Russians are quicker and more effective than English speakers at identifying the difference between light and dark blue because they have two words for this colour. English speakers are less able because they only have one. Until the middle of the last century the Japanese had just one word for blue and green. The need for a separate word for green only appeared when foreign materials entered the country. So, interestingly, items like apples, leaves and traffic lights are still defined as blue in Japan. And yet they're just as green as anywhere else in the world.
