About a lot of confusion about emotional support dogs and people think they're service dogs and they are not. Emotional support dogs are companion animals that provide comfort to individuals with a psychological or physical health challenge; and they may provide companionship. They may reduce loneliness, they may help with anxiety and depression, emotional support dogs. No special training required. Unlike your service dogs who are trained to perform specific task for someone with a disability, no special training is required for emotional support dogs. In the US, they do have some legal protection under the ‘Fair Housing Act’. Landlords who are receiving federal funds must consider an emotional support dog as a reasonable accommodation for disability. The same with our Department of Transportation. However, they can require documentation and some of them do; and the more problems that happened, like we've had some dog bites and things like that happen with emotional support dogs and airplanes; and they can require documentation of more of them are typically they require a healthcare professional who's treating that patient to write a letter on their letterhead, saying this animal is required for this person to travel or is needed on the other end of their travel arrangements, but they may ask for documentation.
