Practice Listening: Highlight Correct Summary ID: #4613 Medium Milk
Instructions
A popular science journal has warned about the possible health risks of a diet deficient in iodine for the increasing numbers of people who are switching from dairy milk to other alternatives. Sales of these milk substitutes have increased dramatically over the past decade, with soya, almond and coconut milk, amongst others, becoming more prevalent on supermarket shelves. What many consumers fail to realize, warns the journal, is that cows' milk is an important source of dietary iodine. Although not generally listed on food nutrition labels, iodine is vital to maintain a healthy body and is especially important for pregnant women—a deficiency can lead to stunted brain development and a lower IQ in infants. Many cows' milk alternatives have significantly lower levels of iodine, with most containing only around two micrograms of the mineral per 200g. Cows' milk, by contrast, provides around seventy micrograms—still only half of the recommended daily intake. Since there isn't a test to detect iodine deficiency, it is up to the individual to ensure that his or her diet contains sufficient levels of this element. The article urges the government to raise awareness of this issue and to recommend that consumers who are switching to these milk substitutes are taking appropriate iodine supplements.
