A team of physicists from the US has developed electricity-conducting, environment-sensing, shape-changing robots that are the size of a human cell. The robots are made from incredibly thin layers of graphene and glass. Known as biomorphs, the tiny machines bend when exposed to heat or electricity. They can change in a fraction of a second from 2-D patterns into complex 3-D forms. Team member Paul McEuen says that what he and his colleagues are trying to build can be called an 'exoskeleton' for electronics. Although the robots are tiny, the physicists say that they can carry significant loads. This opens up a whole range of opportunities. For example, the entire computational power of the spaceship Voyager could be placed onto an object the size of a cell.
