Although  these  days  people  regularly    abroad  for  business  or  to    local  sights,  such  journeys  were  not  always  pleasurable.  During  the  first  half  of  the  19th  century  two  million  Irish  people  made  the  Atlantic  crossing  to  start  a  new  life  in  the  USA.  Political  problems  and  a  lack  of  food  in  Ireland  in  the  1840s  meant  these  people  were  sick  and  hungry.  Some  chose  to    along  the  New  York  route,  while  others  went  to  Canada.  These  journeys  were  long  and  difficult  and  not  everyone  who    a  ship    North  America  safely.  Those  who  arrived  in  Canada  had  to  set  off  on  another  difficult  journey  across  land  to  the  USA.  But  when  people  finally  arrived  in  the  USA,  they  often  succeeded  in  finding  a  better  life.
