A  new  robotic  arm  which  is  controlled  by  thought  has  been  developed  by  researchers  in  the  United  States.  The  team  placed  two  microelectrodes  into  the  brain  of  a  woman  who  is  paralysed  from  the  neck  down.  These    were  then  connected  to  the  arm  through  a  computer    running  a  complex  program  -  one  which  translated  the  signals  in  the  same  way  that  a  healthy  brain  does.  Although  the  woman  was  not  able  to  control  the  hand  at  first,  after  weeks  of  training  she  was  ,  and  with  a  level  of  control  and  flexibility    unseen  before.  It  is  this  which  shows  the  greatest  scientific  advance  and,  as  a  result,  experts  are  calling  it  a  remarkable  achievement.  Some  suggest  that  such  developments  could  end  up  helping  many  of  those  like  the  woman  in  the  experiment  to  lead  fewer  challenging  lives  in  the  future.
