The parents
* Drag the correct answer into all target fields
The parents I surveyed who decided against a bilingual upbringing for their children mentioned reasons for the decision: it is taking an unknown risk; by making them learn a less useful language, parents are an extra burden on a child: by not having one mother tongue, a child doesn’t acquire firm emotional ties with a language or a culture; children should be allowed their own choice. Not surprisingly, parents who decided having two languages for their children were usually more specific in spelling out the disadvantages. During my conversations with them, some people started telling ‘horror stories’: cases of bilingual children who ended up being quite disturbed, who had problems with , who were severely behind at school.
