Charlie Chaplin humour in the era of the silent film circa the 1900s. He developed a kind of physical comedy that parody or satire and laid bare the tragic twists and turns of ordinary life in the modern age. Chaplin began his career by playing an tramp caught up in situations of love and comic ineptitude. Within a few years, however, the same guise was used to portray other, more significant problems in society, ranging from oppressive conditions in factories to the alienation that immigrants faced. Audiences were by this quaint and touching coming together of comedy and pathos.
