Krill are small, shrimp-like animals that only grow to around 5 cm in length, yet are one of the most important species on the planet. They may appear to be a relatively sea creature. However, their position at the bottom of the food chain of hundreds of larger has led to them being described as the 'fuel' that runs the engine of marine ecosystems . There are 85 known species of krill, amongst the most important of which are Antarctic krill and , they congregate in such large numbers at certain times of year that they are clearly from space. Krill form a critical part of the diets of many birds, fish and whales, but are themselves mainly herbivorous. They feed on microscopic plants called algae that float near the surface of the ocean.
