Anton  Chekhov    was    a    Russian    playwright    and    short    story    writer    born    in    Taganrog    in    1860.    In    1879,    he    became    a    medical    student    in    Moscow,  later    qualifying    as    a    doctor  with    a    needy    family    to    support.    Chekllov  took  to  writing,    contributing    humorous    short    stories    and    sketches    to    popular    newspapers.    His    major    work    was    to    come    towards    the    end    of    his    short    life.  Chekhov    died    of    tuberculosis    in    1904    -    his    repulation    resting    chiefly        four    plays,    The    Seagull,  Uncle  Vanya,  The    Three    Sisters    and    The    Cherry    Orchard,    written    in    1896,    1899,    1901    and    1904    .    All    four    works,    light,    gloomy    and    pessimistic        tone,    blend    a    poetic    atmosphere    with    a    sympathetic    treatment    of    characters    who,    unable    to    break        of    the    vicious    circle    that    they    find        in    and    are    trapped    in    unfulfilling    lives    which    they    feel    totally    powerless    and    dispirited    to    change.
