The  ancient  Romans  had  many  of  the  same  problems  that  we  have  today.  One  of  these  was  the    of  living  in  high-rise  blocks.  Even  in  the  1st  century  AD,  the  emperor  Augustus  put  a  limit  of  about  24  metres  on  apartment  blocks  but  a  century  or  two  later  five  and  six-storey  blocks  were  still  quite  common.  The  rooms  were  usually  small,  the  rents  were  high  and  there  was  generally  no  plumbing  or  sanitation.  Pots  were    out  of  the  window  often  onto  the  heads  of    passers-by  and  water  had  to  be  collected  from  a  communal  well.  Also,  fires  were  common  and  caused  many  deaths.  All  this  was  very  different  to  the    villas  of  the  wealthy  which  were  beautifully  laid  out  with  cool,  marble  floors  and    gardens  where  the  owners  spent  much  of  their  time.
