The  building  of  the  Leaning  Tower  of  Pisa  commenced  in  1173.  Construction    five  years  later  due  to  the  outbreak  of  war.  By  then,  work  had  only  reached  the    floor  out  of  the  eventual  total  of  seven.  After  a  long  intermission    resumed  in  1272  but  continued  only  until  1284,  when    again  intervened.  The  final  floor,  housing  the  bells,  wasn't  added  until  1372.  So  in  the  nearly  200  years  that  it  took  to  build  the  Tower,  actual  construction  only  took  place  in  around  20  of  those  years.  The  local    must  have  wondered  whether  it  would  ever  be  finished!
