Practice Reading: Fill in the Blanks (Dropdown) ID: #48224 Reindeer Sleep
Instructions
The  researchers  found  that  the  reindeer  brain,  like  the  human  brain,  knows  how    sleep  it  needs.  They  measured  the  brain  activity  of  four  adult  female  reindeer  using  electrodes  attached  to  their  scalps,  and  observed  their  behavior  during  different  seasons  and  light  conditions.  They  discovered  that  the  reindeer    the  same  amount  of  time  asleep  regardless  of  the  season,  and  that  their  sleep    were  similar  to  those  of  humans.  However,  the  reindeer  also  had  a  unique  ability  to  sleep  while  chewing  the  cud.  This  state  was  similar  to  non-REM  sleep,  and  helped  the  reindeer  reduce  their  sleepiness  after  eating.  The  researchers  speculated  that  this  ability  might  be  especially  important  during  the  summer,  when  the  reindeer  need  to  eat  a  lot  of  food  and    fat  for  the  winter.  By  sleeping  while  digesting,  the  reindeer  could  balance  their  need  for  sleep  and  nutrition.
