A new study has revealed that Indigenous Australians are the most genetically diverse people in the world, with greater genetic than between people of European or Asian ancestry. The study, which involved analyzing the genomes of 83 Indigenous Australians from the continent, also pushed back the of genetic separation between people in Papua New Guinea and those in Australia to about 37,000 years ago. The researchers, led by Professor David Reich from Harvard Medical School, said that the findings shed light on the ancient history and diversity of Indigenous Australian peoples, who were up of at least 200 distinct nations before colonization. They also said that the study could help improve the health and well-being of Indigenous Australians, who suffer from higher rates of chronic diseases and lower life than non-Indigenous Australians.
